MV Kowloon Bridge

Ireland

The Kowloon Bridge is the largest wreck by tonnage in Europe. She sank in November 1986 on passage from Quebec to the River Clyde. With her cargo of almost 2,000 tonnes of fuel oil and a dry cargo of 160,00 tonnes of iron ore pellets, she caused one of the worst oil pollution disasters Ireland has ever seen. She had docked in Bantry Bay after sustaining damage on the Atlantic crossing. After leaving Bantry the steering failed causing the huge ship to collide with the “Stags” (rocks off the NW coast of Inishbofin).
