Underwater river valleys are found on the seafloor produced by a river that stopped running thousands of years before.

During the last glaciation (20,000 years ago) when the sea level was around 120 m lover than present, the shoreline was some kilometers far from the present one. Thus, part of the present continental shelf was land. The rivers that existed at the time, eroded the rock creating a river valley meandering through the landscape. After the sea-level rose, the river valley was flooded and was forever etched into the seafloor.
