Zebra Skin

France

In the bay of Saint-Brieuc (north Brittany coast), an original pattern occurs on a flat and sandy seabed. This is a backscatter with high resolution imagery (500 kHz) from a sidescan sonar system.  The strong backscatter in dark strips corresponds to furrows colonized by crepidula beds (limpets covered 100%). The direction of furrows is parallel to the main offshore swells.

Alternation of white and black strips reminds has the skin of a zebra. In the left part of the image, this effect is strengthened by deformation of bands due to the gyration of the towfish at the end of profile
